Childhood memories are fascinating - what was important historically differs from what matters to a kid. I was almost eight when the Dismissal occurred in November 1975, however I have no memories of it. However I do remember my birthday party that occurred a few weeks later extremely clearly! thinking about it, probably the first major historical event I recall was almost a year earlier - Cyclone Tracy and its aftermath in December 1974. Perhaps catastrophes make a deeper impression on young minds than politics? I wonder in, say, 2030 how many 36 year old Americans (i.e. those born in 1994) will directly remember the divided and rancorous US Election of November 2000? And how many will remember the events of a year later - 11 September 2011? My guess is that most will have few memories of the former and clear memories of the latter...

Gosh Anthony, listening to your primary school voice from 1976 must be eerie. And well done on all of your prescient collecting of historical artefacts (or is it perhaps your unwillingness to throw anything out? ;) Sadly, I threw out my old cassettes years ago in one of my many house moves, and every now and again mourn those lost voices. Indeed your whole post raises an interesting point - how much of modern (i.e. late 20th and early 21st) history will be lost as the former technologies that recorded our every day lives have now aged beyond repair and/or have been discarded? We've not just seen cassette tapes fall out of use but home-movie reels, photographs taken with instant cameras, floppy disks and even video-tapes. So much of what was recorded (and by extension, what we considered as important) in our daily lives could soon be gone, and the fragments that remain may only give us an partial and fractured view of what really happened...

Or maybe one yolk somehow stole the colour from the other?)

I love the possibilities by the "I'm sorry, he's dead" response. You could then burst into tears and say how horrible it is whenever you're reminded of poor old dad's terrible death. You could mention that it was especially distressing because of the way he died: mention something gruesome and memorable enough to stick in their mind. Apologise for breaking down and crying. Ask them if their dad is still alive. No matter what they say, keep steering the conversation back to something unpleasant or sad about your (pretend) father's death. See how long you could spin it out for.
